The Seeing Extremity

The main text which inspired this drawing was the caption: "The Skin Has Eyes" In the following paragraph it is written, "Touch, by clarifying and adding to the shorthand of the eyes, teaches us that we live in a three-dimensional world... We remember the feel of the loved one's hand, how his body curves, the texture of his hair. Touch allows us to find our way in the world in the darkness or in other circumstances where we can't fully use our other senses. By combining eyesight and touch, primates excel at locating objects in space." -Diane Ackerman, A Natural History of the Senses.

For this piece I was inspired by the quote "What a marvel to see so many lives at full stretch, defined by needles and ink, so many people who wished to become their own text." The writing creates a woman's silhouette. The text writes from top to bottom: "Of all the skin-deforming arts, one of the most interesting and ancient is tattoo, which travelled like gossip over trade routes and continents. Ultimately, tattoos make unique the surface of one's self, embody one's secret dreams, adorn with magic emblems the Altamira of the flesh. A person completely tattooed in a single coherent scene makes you wonder about symbolism, decoration, and identity. What a marvel to see so many lives at full stretch, defined by needles and ink, so many people who wished to become their own text."

       For this project, I wanted to incorporate the striped shadows seen, along with the stripes of the sheet. I used this sort of huddled on the ground position, as it is very vulnerable looking. The head down and the hair hanging in locks coupled with dramatic lighting gives a sort of eerie feeling. I had one arm out because I felt it was a better picture and I enjoy the way the strips of light are shown on the arm as well.

Dinner and a Movie Final Picture

  The Letters Inspired by Moonrise Kingdom      This photograph composition was influenced by the Wes Anderson film Moonrise Kingdom, which tells the story of two young kids in love. In the movie the two write little letters to one another. A very romantic thing to do, or used to be. In the present day with technology and being able to call, text, and FaceTime our loved one, we do not have as much a use for handwritten letters. However, I still find the idea of a handwritten letter very endearing and extremely meaningful.        The letter in the photograph is not necessarily meant to be read, the content of it is not important for the image. I did not want to put too much of my own personal context into it, because I do not want it to be about me personally, I simply want it to be an image that people can relate to or feel a connection to.
